ALI BEDNI BUGYAL TREK
Why Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek?
The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is part of the famous Roopkund trek. Since the Roopkund
trek is temporarily closed, we launched the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, which offers a
complete trekking experience with excellent views of the Higher Himalayan ranges.
The twin bugyals of Ali and Bedni are among the best in the country and are well
known in the trekking community. The trek is fairly easy and suited for beginners,
but experienced trekkers can also enjoy it for the unmatched views it offers. Stay on
this page for more details about the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek.

Day 01: Dehradun to Lohajung (296 km Drive)
Journey to Roopkund
Early Morning Drive:
Early morning drive to Kausani via Lohajung base to Roopkund. Reached Dehradun by 7:00 AM from Delhi — the best of all, again for travelers coming from different places. Through the outstanding Kumaon region, taking in Almora, it moves ahead toward Kausani, offering fleeting glimpses of peaks that include Kamet and Panchachuli. We will reach Lohajung by evening and stay overnight in a guest house.
Exploring Lohajung:
The town of Lohajung (2300m) is a small mountain pass leading from the Gwaldam side to the Wan side. In the evening, visit the small, early-closing market of Lohajung or enjoy a marvelous sunset from the balcony of your guesthouse. Have an early dinner and then retire to bed for a good night’s sleep.
Day 02: Lohajung to Tolpani | 2529 FT | 11 Kms
Trek to Tolpani
Leave after warm-up and briefing. The hike is along the forest line parallel to the Neel Ganga River. It is downhill until we reach the river.
The Ascent:
We cross the river via a beautiful metallic bridge and then climb into the trail, which makes for an excellent two-hour climb to reach Didina. From Didina, there’s a relentless one-kilometer stretch that brings us to Tolpani. Along this trek, several viewpoints offer beautiful views of Ali Bugyal as well as the ridge.
Arrival at Tolpani:
We continue on and reach Tolpani, where we will spend the night. We climb up from the slope to arrive by late afternoon, and we shall camp here.
Day 03: Tolpani to Abin Kharak/Khobal Tal | 2456 M | 7.5 Kms
-
Trek to Ali Bugyal:
We get off early to get the best views. The route leads to a quick climb up onto the Ali Bugyal ridge. Once up on the ridge, the route becomes fairly straightforward, with lengthy stretches of leveled ground or gentle elevation. We walk through Ali Bugyal with mountains in the distance all around. You will come to appreciate that these meadows are perhaps the finest in the country.
As you walk through Ali Bugyal, Nanga Ghunti and Trishuli are visible to the east. We take it easy today, with frequent stops that allow plenty of time for photography. Our campground for the day is in a woodland portion between Ali and Bedni Bugyal, also called Abin Kharak or Khobal Tal.
Day 04: Abin Kharak/Khobal Tal to Ghairoli Patal | 2456 M | 5 Kms
-
Trek to Bedni Bugyal and Roopkund
It's a relatively calm day, with not too much climbing. We proceed to Bedni Bugyal, a small pond named Bedni Kund, which will be our lunch halt. After lunch, we climb Bedni Top for one of the best views in the area.
From here, the route continues straight to the top of Roopkund Lake, which is currently closed for camping due to an order from the Uttarakhand High Court. After a brief stop at the top, we will return back to Ghairoli Patal, which happens to be a campsite nestled within a dense jungle.
Day 05: Ghairoli Patal to Wan | 2316 M |Trek Distance: 6 Kms
-
Return Journey to Haldwani
Return by car early in the morning to Haldwani. You shall arrive in Haldwani by evening. It would be wise to return from Kathgodam/Haldwani after 9:00 p.m. given the probability of delays on the way home.
Day 06: Lohajung to Dehradun/Rishikesh
-
Return Journey to Dehradun or Rishikesh
Get into the car in the morning to drive back to Dehradun or Rishikesh. It will be late at night when you reach Dehradun. The drop-off periods at Dehradun and Rishikesh are about an hour apart.
Passengers will be dropped at Rishikesh, followed by Dehradun. Return from Dehradun or Rishikesh is preferable after 9 PM to account for the possible delay of the road trip.
