Day 04: Tshoka (2,900 M) to Dzongri (3,970 M) Trekking Duration: 6 - 8 hours
-
Hike to Dzongri:
It is today's hike to Dzongri that stands at 3,970 metres altitude and was a strenuous climb for about 6-8 hours. While leaving Tshoka, I could feel that the landscape completely changes from tree line upwards. Climbing more than 1,000 meters in just one stretch was very tiring, hence, it is essential to keep up a good pace so that your body could acclimatize with the process.
The trail starts off as a boarded pathway of wooden logs, lined with gorgeous rhododendron flowers. After two hours on your trek, you will be at Phedang, the large clearing that is bedecked with prayer flags, and snow-capped mountains. This is a long break you are to take to refuel before continuing your journey.
From Phedang, Dzongri still 4-5 hours with steep ascents. Therefore, you better get all layered in good time ahead of camp to tackle fierce winds, which makes temperatures go below freezing at night. After all that Dzongri offers with the panoramic view, enjoy the sightseeing surrounding you, then its night, and off to further adventures tomorrow.
As you approach Dzongri, you prepare for one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the Goechala Trek.
Day 05: Dzongri (3, 970 M) to Thansing (3, 704 M) Trekking duration: 4- 5 hours
-
Trek to Dzongri Top:
At 4 AM, you will climb to Dzongri Top at 3,946 meters. The hour-long ascent will treat you to an unforgettable view of the Singalila and Kanchenjunga ranges at the break of dawn in beautiful hues of sunrise. If the weather is clear, alpenglow turns the mountains into molten gold in the morning sun.
After refreshing with some breathtaking scenery you will proceed to have breakfast at Dzongri and then hike down to Thansing. It is a much easier trek from 3,704 meters, requiring only 4 to 5 hours, with gentle ascents and descents on the scenic Prek River.
This is going to be one of the best camp sites on the Goechala Trek as it is at the base of Mt. Pandim. Settle down in the camp site, have the amazing scenic beauty around, and be ready for the day's excitement.
Early morning will take you for a great trek from Dzongri to Thansing.
Day 06: Thansing (3, 704 M) to Lamuney (4,145 M) Trekking duration: 2-3 hours
-
Trek to Lamuney:
The day starts off with an easy, fairly flat trek. This is one of the more pleasing days on the Goechala Trek with its gorgeous landscapes. The trekker will have an added day at Thansing in case the group requires additional acclimatization.
If you continue on to Lamuney, it will take about 2 to 3 hours. Then, when you get to Lamuney, it is a half-hour steep climb to the beautiful glassy body of water Samiti Lake, which comes with some of the most gorgeous views. It is an incredibly peaceful lake that you can use as an excellent viewing spot for wildlife in the region, especially mountain goats and blue birds that come here often.
Please note that camping is not allowed near the lake, but you can spend some time gazing at its beauty. Then you'll return to camp at Lamuney for the night, surrounded by the great mountains. Enjoy the peaceful evening with an eye to what lies ahead.
This hike up to Thansing and then on to Lamuney is a quiet day of trudging, trekking from Thansing to Lamuney.
Day 07: Lamuney (4,145 M) to View-Point 1 (4,602 M) to Thansing (3, 704 M) Time: 12-13 hours
-
Summit Day of Goechala Trek:
Day seven is the summit of your Goechala Trek, full of challenges and unforgettable rewards.
This is the most challenging day of the trek as you have to wake up early enough to witness the sunrise at View Point 1. If you camp at Thansing, then your day begins at 1 AM; if you have arrived at Lamuney, then you will start your trek at 3 AM. You need to get up early enough so that you can feel the golden light of sun rays across the Kanchenjunga range.
There is long ascent, most of it in darkness so carry your headlamp with you. Now, climb up as the expectation climbs to View Point 1 for the sight of the panorama of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Seeing the snow clad peaks lighten up with the first sun rays is indeed inspiring, and emotionally so as well because it is one thing that you could never forget in life.
After having enjoyed the scenic scenery and basking in this feeling of accomplishment, you head back down to Thansing. This is a really long trek, taking anything from 12 to 13 hours, as you navigate back through the breathtaking sceneries you have gone through. When you are at Thansing, pause for a moment to reflect upon the fantastic journey you have successfully completed and rest well for the day that has been filled with such extraordinary experiences.
Day 08: Thansing (3,704 M) to Tshoka (2,900 M) Trekking Duration: 6-7 hours
Descent from Thansing to Tshoka:
On day eight of your journey, you will descend from Thansing to Tshoka, covering round about 6 to 7 hours.
The trek back to Tshoka poses its own risks as parts of it are sometimes steep and one needs to tread carefully, especially in the month of December when part of the trek might be frozen. Descending also needs to be done with every caution in view to safety and stability.
The trek down is beautiful and filled with colors of spring if you are trekking in spring season; you’ll see beautiful rhododendron trees throughout the trek trails. Such a trek would be an enchanting experience of nature’s beauty.
Enjoy the quietness of the forest, the sounds of nature all the way down, where you are enjoying the landscapes that you cross. Reach Tshoka and make time to rest and to reflect on the incredible experience that you have collected along your journey.
Day 09: Tshoka (2,900M) to Yuksom (1,720 M) Trekking Duration: 6-7 hours
-
Return Trek to Yuksom:
It will take up about 6 to 7 hours for the trek back to Yuksom from Tshoka.
It generally follows downhill from here, but not very comforting on the knees. Take stock of your pacing and trekking techniques to soften up the rigors on your knees. The final ascent up to Yuksom includes a couple of short stretches up hill, so it will be a bit of an exertion as you get nearer your destination.
Once you arrive at Yuksom, you are free to relax and rejuvenate in memory of your trek. An overnight at a comfortable hotel assures you that you can unwind and revitalize yourselves for a new day of mountain adventure.
